Our Resident football-mad Ambient Lounge Twin Couch Expert says:

Score: Australia 1, Chile 3.

Highlights: Tim Cahill's gravity defying wonder 1st goal. Bresciano's strike that went oh so close.... Socceroos pace and ball movement in second half that looked slick and World Class.

Lowlights: The first 15 minutes of horror. Cahill's 2nd goal being called very marginally offside. Chilean players diving everywhere.

The Socceroos absolutely played their hearts out.... the whole of Australia can be totally proud. Barring the first 15 minutes where we looked like rabbits in a headlight - we more than matched it with our fancied opponents - dare we say we shaded them in play and deserved better.

2 Leaked goals from an extremely  shaky defense had us all fearing the worst. We looked like A-league cellar dwellers in those minutes and we were all holding our heads as the second goal hit the abck of the net. Then... out of nowhere...came the spirited revival.

Credit to caoch Ange Postecoglou and his youth policy ... and older team would have been blown away we fear. These Aussies ran, ran and ran some more... chased, harrassed and grew in confidence by the minute. Especially when Timmy... the man ...Cahill rose just before the half with another header and scored. What a moment!

In he second half we were all over them... but couldnt score... though we were oh so close witha  disallowed goal for offside and Bresch's strike being stunningly saved by their goalkeeper. They got a goal in extra time as we chased the result and the score wasnt a true reflection of how close we were. Dare we say we could have almost won that game.

It was a high tempo and good quality start to the Wolrd Cup for the Aussies. On the back of a super-surprising 5-1 beating of Spain by Holland - the Socceroos chased a result... and were stiff not to get it.

That performace will mean though that teams will fear us..even mighty ones like Holland and under-pressure Spain. Well done Aussies, we're so proud. A Socceroos dynasty was born yesterday... watch this space.
